‘Well, Jane,’ I hear you cry, ‘I might, if I knew what a social magnet was…’
O.K, so let’s ask Google just what is it and is it a good thing? Here’s her* response:
A social magnet is someone who naturally attracts and draws people to them, often due to their positive personality, strong communication skills, and genuine interest in others. They possess qualities that make others feel comfortable, valued, and inspired, leading them to seek out the company of the “social magnet”
Apple Magic
This is what you get if you search ‘Apple Store’… via Unsplash
Let me give you an example. The other day I was in The Apple Shop in Bath. Not because I was having trouble uploading data to my new phone… OK, well, I was having trouble uploading data to my new phone, but it’s because the new phone needed an update. Apparently it had been on the shelf too long. Sigh.
If you’ve ever been in an Apple store you’ll know they have a succession of people to meet and greet you. It’s an experience. Eventually you get diverted to the GENIUS bar. (No shortage of confidence with Apple).
Greeter number two was very sweet and I thanked him for being so smiley and welcoming. ‘But I didn’t smile’ he said. And he hadn’t. But, I said, you exude smiliness without even smiling!
That’s social magnetism. Customers were seeking him out because he seemed confidant, approachable, yet knowledgeable. That surely has to be good for your career?
Positive Personality – Social Magnet

People with a positive personality are usually kind and upbeat. They are the radiators of life, not the drains. (Check out Do You Radiate Or Drain?). They lean towards optimism, and take a proactive approach to problems. They are empathetic.
Strong Communication Skills – Social Magnet
Good communication skills are an asset in every walk of life. If you want to advance your career they are almost always essential.
Here’s another trait which will help make you exceptional. Try and under the context of the recipient for your words of wisdom. In other words, ‘walk a mile in their moccasins’. Don’t jump to judgment but attempt to understand.
And be polite. Or in other words, be kind. Funny how that one keeps cropping up.
People love being asked questions about themselves. Think about the radiators in your life. They don’t drone on about themselves all the time, that’s a drainers job. As with most things, if this isn’t a natural talent of yours, practice makes perfect. Aim to have a few conversations when you don’t talk about yourself but focus on the other person or persons. Listen to what they say. Respond to what they say. Try not to be formulating your answer in your head while l they are speaking. It shows.
If you try those three you’re bound to be a social magnet!
Newsflash – Coaching for Charity!
I am offering coaching sessions, one off, for an hour, at £50 a session. On any topic. Every single penny is going to charity. Two special charities in particular. The money doesn’t come to me but direct to the charities.
My husband has Parkinsons’s Disease. If you a regular newsletter reader you’ll know that we’ve had a tricky few years. (I am rarely understated but I am here… It’s been hell.) A constant source of support has been The Firefighters Charity. I just can’t tell you how wonderful they are and if I tried I’d probably start blubbing everywhere. None of us want that…
Equally, over the last few months I have come to know the work of the wonder that is Parkinson’s UK. Amongst other things they invest in support for patients and research into this cruel disease. There is currently no cure. But I am optimistic that there will be! They just need a little help from their friends…
If you have ever thought coaching might be helpful now’s your time to try it out. I am offering a one hour virtual session at £50. To take advantage of this just let me know you’re interested via email, jane@changingpeople.co.uk. No obligation. If you choose to go ahead, you’ll get a link to the two JustGiving Pages :The Firefighters Charity and Parkinson’s UK. Ideally I’d love you to share the fee equally between the two but I appreciate that might be a pain. Once you’ve paid, you let me know and we book in our session to suit you!
*The famous oracle, Delphi, was a woman so I’m assuming Google is too. Not such a nice name tho…should have been called Delphi. As in ‘I’ll just Delphi that’. Much better.
