Book Review – The Ten Hour Diet by Jeanette Hyde

The 10 Hour Diet from Jeannette Hyde

Just in case you’re wondering, I haven’t suddenly become an expert on nutrition, as you well know if you’ve met me in the ‘oh too solid flesh’. Nor am I about to share with you the secrets to weight loss in only 10 hours (although, actually I am in a way).

I am, however, going to introduce you to my friend, nutritionist Jeannette Hyde, and her latest book, The 10 Hour Diet, based on proper research (you know how keen I am on that), and her considerable experience.

It’s endorsed by no less a personage than Professor Tim Spector and I rate him very highly. You know you’re in safe hands when he has given his seal of approval.

Jeannette Hyde

I first came across Jeanette’s work while researching my own health issues. I’ve had a chunk of my intestines removed (too much information?) and spent very long periods of time on antibiotics which play havoc with your biome making you susceptible to all sorts of infections.

I wrote something about this in How Good Are You at Managing Stress

Jeannette had a life changing experience which led her down the path of healthier living. She had been a successful journalist in London, but experienced burnout which made her seriously re-evaluate how she lived her life. You can read more about that in her latest book, The 10 Hour Diet, or in this interview I did with her back in 2019 – Inspirational Woman – Jeannette Hyde. Here’s an extract below:

How did you move into the world of nutrition? When did you first realise that you could make a career from it?
I had a burn out and realised that the body and mind can only take so much life hunched over a computer under artificial light in a hostile environment. Humans need basics like proper food (not junk on the run), sunlight, movement, sleep, and quality connections with family and friends to thrive and be healthy. This is when I became interested in the power of food and nutrition and decided to study a BSc in nutrition at Westminster University for four years and left journalism. I always knew though that I wanted to use my research and writing skills from journalism at some point to share whatever cutting-edge information I was going to discover from nutritional science. And become like a translator – taking a complicated subject and boiling it down to be accessible to all. This was my mission with The Gut Makeover.

Do You Want to Eat More Healthily?

I know from coaching throughout this past year that a lot of you have become much more conscious about keeping as well and as healthy as you can. It’s hard, especially if you’re working from home. I also know you love to read stories of women who have changed their lives. Jeannette combines both.

I’ve been fascinated for some time about the health benefits of fasting (back to Tim Spector) and that’s one of the reasons I attended a course run by Jeannette back in 2019. It was excellent and hugely good value.

She now has a new book out, The 10 Hour Diet Book, where she once again demystifies the jargon and gives you the essentials. The clue is in the title. In brief, you eat in a 10 hour window and eat nothing for the remainder of the time.

Fasting Demystified

Remember that Jeanette was a journalist and this is very evident in her style. The book is very accessible and well explained. You get recipes, too, and a journal to help you keep you motivated and log your progress.

The goal of the book is to help you be more healthy, followed by slow weight loss with the minimum of changes to your diet. I promise you, she does not preach. Jeannette herself rarely uses the term ‘diet’ as it implies restrictions etc, but everyone else does, so it made its way onto the cover. It’s interesting to note that Jeannette also prioritises sleep as part of a healthy lifestyle. As she says:

If your fasting isn’t backed up by making sleep a priority you could end up sicker and heavier.

Five Stars for The 10 Hour Diet

Just in case you are in any doubt, I wholeheartedly recommend this book to you; it gets five stars from me. It’s very easy to read and digest (no pun intended), not padded out with extraneous information so it’s succinct, full of sensible advice, which is relatively easy to follow, and well referenced if you want to read the research. I read the whole book over a couple of evenings.

It could easily be the most life changing book you ever buy.
