Books by My Bedside, Women Writers, Obviously… Jackie Kay

Jacke Kay is a glorious woman. OK, I’ve never met her, but I’ve heard her lots on the radio and she sounds grand. I did have tickets to hear her read but it was during my ‘keep being ill’ period, so I didn’t get to go. However, a good friend bought me this book back, signed, and I have several others by her.

In case you don’t know, Jackie is the Scottish Makar, (poet laureate for Scotland) and recipient of an MBE. She is the child of a Scottish mother and a Nigerian father, adopted by strongly left wing Scottish parents, whom she obviously adores. This book of poems is partly the story of her quest to track down her father. Fiere is the Scottish word for ‘companion, friend, equal’ and there is much about friendship in this collection, too. Published by Picador at 9.99.

Here is an extract:

 Night Moths by Jackie Kay

Last night when I opened my back door

ten red moths flew into my kitchen

their paper wings, delicate as lanterns.

At night they suddenly came to light like motifs to folklore,

and now, suddenly ten, lined across my wall –

and kept so still: I wondered if they were ill.

I captured each visitor in an empty glass

the ancestors come in many guises –

and took each one to the open door, and watched as, under the one winged moon,

over the fence and into the starry sky,

the fluttering wings became a hello and a goodbye.

It’s a slim volume and even if poetry isn’t really your thing, I think you will find something in it to enjoy.

Women Writers Book Club

The next book we are looking at in book club is The Cliff, by Amanda Jennings. Several people have recommended it to me so I’ll be reading it soon and letting you know what I think.
