Don’t Look Back in Anger…. here’s how

Happy Women courtsey of Kingdom News

OK, here we are at the end of the year, cue lots of advice on how to live well next year, make resolutions, be happy etc. Here’s my two penn’orth –

Don’t look back in anger.

Instead, look back on your year and focus on everything that has gone well with you. It’s so tempting to get into the ‘shoulds’ and ‘oughts’ but try not to go there. Instead, embrace the principles of Appreciative Inquiry. In brief, look at what has worked well for you this year. I am not talking about huge things but all those little triumphs that get lost in the mist of time.  However your last 12 months have been here you are. You have come through! Stronger and wiser.

We have an exercise looking at this on RenewYou. It is very tempting to list all the things all you didn’t do, and then make a list of the same resolutions as last year, only to not achieve them again. Make one change this year and that’s how you think about making changes. (Stay with me…)

When we over-focus on what is wrong, what is negative about our job, personal life and so on, we can make that grow in importance. We don’t leave enough room for all the good things to grow and prosper. Resolve to shift your focus off what isn’t working onto what actually is. Ask yourself, what really works well in my life? It’ll probably be a bit difficult to start with but you’ll get better with practice. Once you have identified what works for you, do more of it. Take those principles/thoughts/actions and apply them to all areas of your life.

And then have a wonderful and successful year!

Note to trainers, coaches, and learning & development personnel

In brief, it is about filling women with confidence and helping them plan the next 12 months. It sits happily alongside other personal development type courses, gender equality initiatives, and coaching. (In fact, participants finish with a perfect coaching plan for the next 12 months.) If you’re looking for something new to add to your repertoire do take a look. All details are here.
