Women in Business – Top Tips from Zita Alves

This week I’d like to introduce you to Zita Alves. Looking at her it’s hard to believe but she was once over weight, unfit and unhappy in her work.  She has made a career out of her passion for fitness, and my aching limbs can attest to the fact!

Here is Zita’s story:

I help busy men and women (especially the over 40’s) to feel healthier, fitter and happier through a holistic approach via 1-1 personal training and group outdoor exercise classes in the form of Zest Bootcamp in Bath. I also have a 7 day detox plan and 30 day fat loss cookbook.

I changed careers in 1998 from a stressed out, unfit, overweight, non-exercising, asthmatic project manager in a busy direct marketing agency to retrain as a personal trainer and sports massage therapist. I had gone travelling to South America after redundancy and on my return I knew I didn’t want the stressed out lifestyle that I previously had but had no idea what I want to do, so when a radio advert popped up asking “would you like to become a personal trainer”

I suddenly decided that was what I was going to do, despite hardly doing any exercise at school or in the 10 subsequent years. I knew I wanted to work for myself after having worked for several larger companies. I did the training course. In 2009, I set up Bath’s original outdoor group exercise programme Zest Bootcamp (originally called Bath Bootcamp).

I absolutely believe that once you find your true passion then it will not feel like work as what you are doing feeds your purpose and creates the energy needed to run your own business. For me my passion is to help other people (especially women) realise that they don’t have to feel lethargic, out of shape, unwell, unhappy in their clothes, unable to run around after their children or whatever it is that means they are not the best version of themselves. I used to be that person and I want to share my experiences, knowledge and passion with more people. It is this passion which means I can stand in a freezing cold field, in the dark at 6.30am and help a group of people who would probably rather be in bed to get the results they deserve.

My Three Tips

1. Treating your customers, clients, and also staff, the way you would like to be treated is a simple way to ensure we do a great job every day. Good customer service is so important.

2. Don’t be afraid to say no, to change the direction your business takes, or ask for help. I’ve invested time and money with people who know more about certain aspects of business than I do in order to learn from the best, avoid the pitfalls they did and keep myself surrounded by people that will raise my game.

3. It takes time and consistent persistence as well as getting out of your comfort zone to make a business work and it won’t happen overnight. If you know what your “perfect day” involves start with that and work backwards. Then you know what you have to do to achieve that.

If you’d like to contact Zita you can find more about her her at Zest BootCamp or call 07970 988128.

Thanks for the comments. It’s great to hear from women not in the public eye, isn’t it? Please do encourage businesswomen you know to send something in. Jane
