I really like your post and want to see more women in the board room too!

Women AND men are difficult at work. Both can be lousy, or extraordinary managers and leaders.

I hate it when people call women bitchy too. :(

I think BBC Newsnight often gets it right which shows it can be done. Libby's point about having phone numbers to hand is most telling I think. Basically, do what you've always done, go with who you know. Aka, the old boy's network? Am in discussion with Funny Woman founder, Lynne Parker for a future interview. You should hear her on subject of female stand ups. very hard to get a look in.

Jane - this sits nicely in the category of women who are sitting at the table not being prepared to raise a hand to give other women a lift up!

The BBC is paid for by the tax payer and as such should represent government policy! There are many excellent female journalists - other channels seem to find them. Maybe time to vote with your remote.

It is so important to comabt ageism in the workplace. A recent study suggested that older people were discriminated against in the hiring process, as many younger hiring managers were not confident in their ability to manage someone older than themselves. Obviously an issue that needs to be addressed- especially with an ageing workforce and population!

Until starting out in business on my own, I predominantly worked in a corporate setting with and alongside men, finding the women very competitive and ruthless in pursuit of their career goals - men were so much more helpful. The tide has now turned, I find the women entrepreneurs more reliable in terms of when they offer support, they follow through and they are extremely encouraging - the men make promises, which too often they somehow manage to forget!

Very touching and warm article Jane! Whilst we don't want to consider our own mortality much, how we want to be remembered in death should give us a powerful motivator to be a better person in life!
