Tamsin Greig is playing in Shakespeare. Not especially surprising news, she’s a very good actress. However, she is playing a role usually taken by a man and that is unusual. In Shakespeare’s day men usually took on the women’s roles and Tamsin says she can see no reason why women shouldn’t play parts usually taken by men.
“There is no part that a woman can’t do” she said.
Tamsin is performing the role of Malvolio, in Twelfth Night, directed by Simon Godwin at The National Theatre.
I’ve chosen a piece from The Guardian newspaper to link to for more on this story as it gives a good overview of the issues for women in the theatre. The photo of Tamsin is also courtesy of the Guardian, by Tristram Kenton.
