Female Power, the stories, by the excellent Mary Beard

How could you ever imagine women running anything?

The ever interesting Mary Beard on March 3rd, 2017, giving her lecture to The London Review of Books, on the cultural underpinnings of misogyny in the workplace. When she refers to the USA senators you could almost believe she’s talking about Ancient Greece…not that the UK has anything to crow about.

Do yourself a favour, grab a drink, take a break, and listen to Mary talking about how language is so important and the metaphors used to describe women’s power. It’s a longish lecture, just over an hour, but well worth listening to. You might be surprised to learn just how much the Ancient Greeks still influence how we talk about powerful women.

We have no template for what a powerful woman may look like, except that she looks like a man.

Mary Beard features frequently in these pages. I once had the pleasure of interviewing her, which you can see here. (If the video doesn’t open for you, this link will take you to the website for the London Book Review where you can hear the lecture in full.)
