An Interesting Perspective on Power and Men

In 2015, Laura Dodsworth, photographer, published a book called Bare Reality where she looked at ordinary women and their breasts. It’s a fabulous book, (I have it), and contained the stories of 100 women with differing experiences. The unifying factor was no one was airbrushed; we got to see real women with real bodies. It was liberating.

Now Laura has produced another book along the same theme, but this time looking at men and their penises. It’s called Manhood. 100 men have been interviewed and encouraged to talk freely about their life and connection with their appendage. Many feel insecure and size features a lot. As with Bare Reality, no faces, just the torso. It is quite strange to see so many penises in one place as usually they are hidden from view.

There is one story from a transgender man featured recently in The Guardian Magazine, which speaks volumes about gender equality today. I have reproduced the quote below:

I was born in a female body, but never felt I was a girl, from at least the age of three. When I reached puberty, it started to dawn on me that I was different. I didn’t feel comfortable in this body.

Sexuality felt massive, loaded with shame, because at my all-girls school, if you were a lesbian, that’s it, you’d be bullied. The problem was, I didn’t think I was a lesbian, anyway. I was attracted to women, but I felt like a guy.

I changed my gender when I was 26. I was treated as male in public by the time I was 28. I noticed changes, certainly in the business world. When I was female and in the company of men, I was treated as “less than”, inferior, stereotyped. As soon as I was perceived as being male, men would assume that I was the one in charge. Always. I’m a small guy in height, so I was surprised to feel that power, and actually didn’t know what to do with it.

I’ve heard this in reverse from transgender women, about how differently they are perceived and treated. Its fascinating.

We still have a way to go.
