One of the contenders for the Labour leadership in the UK, Jeremy Corbyn, has made a suggestion that ‘women only carriages’ on trains could be a good idea. It would allow them to travel unmolested. He has ‘put it out there’ and says he will discuss it further with women.
He is getting quite a loud response already. That response is thanks, but no thanks. We appreciate the offer but offering us segregation is not the answer. It might treat a symptom but is not getting to the root of the problem. The root is that we live in a sexist society where abuse, verbal or physical, of women is mainstream and that is the culture that needs challenging.
What do you think?
