None of us get through life without a few scars. The older you are the more you may have. Sometimes we’ve got those scars as part of learning and growing. But often it’s just simply life in all its wonderful randomness. Stuff happens. Stuff happens which we couldn’t have foreseen and couldn’t have changed.
And when it does we are tested. We can feel weakened, threatened or defeated by life’s random events, or we can ultimately be made stronger.
Epictetus was a Stoic philosopher born in 55 AD. I was born in 1955 AD. Which makes it somewhat amazing that words of his have guided much of my adult life. I think you will find them helpful, too. I share them at the end of all my seminars and speaking engagements.
The words of Epictetus have always helped me to feel stronger. He said:
We are not touched so much by life events themselves, but by the view we choose to take of them.
We cannot always control events in our lives but we can take control of ourselves. It may take some time and some practice but we can do it. We have a choice in how we respond to the random events which test us. Understanding that can stop us feeling like victims, put us back in control.
Paradoxically, even when it seems we have no choice, we have a choice. You are in control.
