Every time I hear someone say, let being the best decide, I wonder who defines best.
It continually crops up in debates about feminism. Merit should be the final arbiter.
I agree, if merit, if what constitutes the best is agreed upon by a representative group of men and women. Unfortunately we are not in that place. The definition of what or who is ‘best’ is still rooted in the past; decades upon decades of decisions and values as defined by men, and men alone.
It’s very hard for a woman to be the best under criteria created by men. That is why I am still a proud feminist and not, to quote a new phrase, an ‘equalist’.
